SECONDARY TREATMENT OF SULLAGE WASTEWATER USING ROUGH AND SLOW SAND FILTRATION A. El-Morsy Ahmed Water Engineering Dept., Faculty of Engineering, Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt Abstract: Challenges of wastewater treatment concerning high construction cost of the wastewater treatment plants and operation and maintenance, also the requirements of highly qualified operators, specially with the mechanical biological treatment systems, made investigation to suit simple systems of low costs and easy operation and maintenance of great importance. Slow sand and rough filtrations were effective systems when applied in water treatment, due to these filters being easy to construct and operate, with their high filtrate quality. Investigation herein was conducted to study the ability of both the rough and slow sand filters to secondarily treat the sullage wastewater, which primarily treated through interceptor tanks. The rough filter used in this study mainly was 100 cm gravel of 6-8 mm size operated at filtration rates of 20 and 30 m.d. While the slow sand filter used was 60 cm sand of 0.2 mm effective size operated at rates of 4.5 and 8.0 m.d. Studies continued for two stages of four and two months for the first stage and second stage, respectively. BOD5 removal of 35% and 61% was achieved through the rough filter and the slow sand filter, respectively. Also, removal of suspended solids was of 45% and 82% through the rough filter and slow sand filter, respectively. Runs of the rough filter usually extended between 38 and 17 days, while that of the slow sand filter was between 12 – 6 days, according to the filtration rates.

Identification and Quantification of Major Organic Foulants in Ultrafiltration of Treated Domestic Wastewater and their Removal by Slow Sand Filtration as Pre-treatment
The present study investigates major organic foulants in ultrafiltration (UF) of treated domestic wastewater and their removal in slow sand filtration. Identification and quantification of major foulants was conducted in labscale experiments. Quantified results suggest that biopolymers (large molecular protein-like and polysaccharidelike materials) are major organic foulants in UF. This conclus...

متن کاملPerformance evaluation of slow sand filters using fuzzy rule-based modelling
The main objective of this study is to evaluate and predict the performance of slow sand filters used for wastewater treatment. The uncertainties in the control parameters and processes require fuzzy sets to be used when modelling system performance. Fuzzy logic if–then rules were used to build a model for the removal efficiency (total coliforms) of slow sand filters. The data were collected fr...

The current study evaluates the performance of a pilot scale fed batch reactor (FBR), fo llowed by coagulation and sand filtration, for the treatment of an oil refinery wastewater. The total reductions in COD, BOD, oil contents and phenol were 95.11%, 94.30%, 99.47% and 100%, respectively, with FBR followed by coagulation and sand filtration. This FBR-coagulation-sand filtration treatment syste...
متن کاملCan those organic micro-pollutants that are recalcitrant in activated sludge treatment be removed from wastewater by biofilm reactors (slow sand filters)?
The degradation of seven compounds which are usually recalcitrant in classical activated sludge treatment (e.g., diclofenac, propranolol, iopromide, iohexol, iomeprol tebuconazole and propiconazole) was studied in a biofilm reactor (slow sand filtration). This reactor was used to treat real effluent-wastewater at different flow rates (hydraulic loadings) under aerobic conditions so removal and ...
